ASK THE DOG
Failed smog? Help may be available.
California may help pay for emissions repairs—or pay you to retire an eligible vehicle.
Two options through California’s CAP.
The Bureau of Automotive Repair’s Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) offers assistance based on eligibility and available funding.
Repair assistance
Income-eligible owners may qualify for emissions-repair assistance after a failed biennial Smog Check. Vehicle requirements and a customer copayment apply. Check repair eligibility
Vehicle retirement
Eligible owners may receive a payment to retire their vehicle. The payment depends on the program option and eligibility. The vehicle must be operational and meet equipment and other requirements. Inspection requirements vary by option; not every retirement option requires a failed inspection. Check retirement eligibility
APPLY WITH BAR
Apply before you repair or retire.
1. Review BAR’s current income, vehicle and registration requirements.
2. Apply and wait for your letter of eligibility.
3. Follow the letter’s instructions for a participating STAR test-and-repair station or BAR-contracted dismantler.
CAP does not reimburse work or retirement completed before approval.
Check the registration requirements.
Repair assistance does not cover vehicles undergoing a change of ownership, initial registration or re-registration into California.
Our role is inspection.
Sacramento Smog Dog is a test-only station. We do not perform repairs or approve CAP applications. Keep your Vehicle Inspection Report for the next step.
