ASK THE DOG

After your inspection.

Your Vehicle Inspection Report helps explain the result and the next step.

Smog Dog explains an inspection report beside a separate registration-process panel connected by a next-step arrow.

Keep your report.

The Vehicle Inspection Report—often called the VIR—records the inspection result. Review it with the station if you have a question about what it says.

Your next step starts with the result.

If your vehicle passes

Finish your DMV steps.

The smog certificate is sent electronically to DMV. Passing does not complete registration renewal; finish DMV’s separate requirements and keep your report.

If your vehicle does not pass

Start with the reason.

Next steps depend on the report and may include emissions repairs and another inspection. A repair provider can help with needed repairs.

STATE ASSISTANCE

Repair help. Or money to retire your vehicle.

California’s Consumer Assistance Program may help eligible owners with emissions repairs or offer a vehicle retirement payment. Approval and program requirements apply.

Apply before you repair or retire. CAP does not reimburse work or retirement completed before approval.

One result does not explain everything.

A “not ready” monitor, a diagnostic code and an inspection result are different kinds of information. Ask about the specific item listed on your report instead of assuming one term tells the whole story.

Learn about readiness
