Look for the vehicle details, smog instructions and deadline on your actual notice.

Three places to start.

Vehicle: confirm the plate and vehicle information match your car.
Smog instruction: check whether an inspection is required and whether STAR is specified.
Deadline: follow the renewal date and DMV instructions printed on your actual notice.

Does it say STAR?

A test-only station may also be STAR certified, but the terms do not mean the same thing. If your actual notice requires STAR, use a station with current STAR certification.

Already passed your inspection?

The smog certificate is sent electronically to DMV. You still need to complete DMV’s separate renewal requirements. Keep your Vehicle Inspection Report.
