Smog Dog explains the smog inspection, from the vehicle check to the inspection report.

SMOG CHECK
BASICS

Know what to bring, what the inspection checks, and what to do next.

Do I need a smog check?

Start with your DMV renewal notice. It tells you whether an inspection is due and whether a STAR station is required.

Selling a vehicle or registering one from another state follows different rules. A newer car may be exempt for renewal but still need a check for another transaction. Follow the requirements for your vehicle and situation.

What should I bring?

Bring your vehicle and DMV renewal notice, if you have it. If you are returning after a failed inspection, bring the earlier inspection report too, so you can discuss what happened.

What to bring

Is test-only the same as STAR?

No. Test-only means the station performs inspections without emissions repairs. STAR is a separate certification. If your notice requires STAR, choose a station with that certification.

Sacramento Smog Dog provides test-only inspections for model year 2000 and newer only. Call with your vehicle year, make, model and notice requirements to confirm we can help.

What does the inspection check?

The inspector checks emissions equipment and information from the vehicle’s onboard computer. The required checks vary by vehicle. Sacramento Smog Dog inspects model year 2000 and newer only; we no longer offer dynamometer testing for older vehicles.

My check-engine light is on. What now?

If the light stays on while the engine is running, have the problem diagnosed before your inspection. Clearing a code does not repair the cause and can leave the car's self-checks unfinished.

Even when the check-engine light is off, the vehicle may not be ready to pass.

What does "not ready" mean?

The car's computer has not finished one or more emissions self-checks, called readiness monitors. This can happen after a battery disconnect, a repair or cleared codes.

There is no mileage number that makes every car ready. Our readiness search lets you enter your vehicle, select all incomplete monitors and search Google for relevant drive-cycle information.

I passed. Is my registration finished?

Your passing certificate is sent electronically to DMV. You still need to finish the registration process and pay any fees due to DMV. Keep your inspection report.

What if my vehicle does not pass?

Ask the inspector to explain the report. The next step depends on whether the issue involves readiness, emissions equipment, codes or another part of the inspection.

Eligible owners may get state help with emissions repairs or vehicle retirement through California's Consumer Assistance Program. Review the program's requirements before arranging program-funded repairs.
